The common botanic name for San Pedro is Trichocereus pachanoi, named after Professor Abelardo Pachano, who participated in botany expeditions with Dr. Rose, the original western collector, in 1918. However, it is worth noting that taxonomists have since moved the Trichocereus genus into the Echinopsis genus. It is now referred to as Echinopsis pachanoi, although not all botanists agree with this merger.

Trichocereus pachanoi is native to mountainous areas of South America and thrives in many regions of Australia. The San Pedro Cactus features large cream flowers of exquisite beauty when it reaches full maturity. They can grow up to 4 meters tall and are known for their tolerance to drought and frost. Trichocereus pachanoi is quite adaptable, allowing it to thrive in various parts of the country, such as the Blue Mountains, Canberra and Victoria, due to its ability to withstand cold weather and heat.

The San Pedro species has a fascinating historical and cultural significance.
Similar to other Trichocereus cacti, Trichocereus pachanoi is traditionally used for spiritual healing purposes in native cultures. The common name "San Pedro" was given in memory of Saint Peter, who guards the gates of heaven. Native Americans know it as Huachuma.

San Pedro is an excellent choice for grafting stock, as it is considered superior to Myrtillocactus geometrizans and more tolerant and long-lived than Hylocereus sp., although not as fast-growing.
Cactus Vision sells cactus logs as 30cm cuts for propagation or grafting, as well as potted plants with roots.

Position the plant in half-day or full-day direct sunlight, outdoors. Cactus Vision does not recommend housing any of the Trichocereus cacti indoors without full-day sun.
While tending to your San Pedro Cactus, it is important to be vigilant for common pests such as mealybugs and scale. Regular monitoring and appropriate pest control measures will help ensure the health and vitality of your cactus.
