Cleistocactus winteri, also known as the golden rat tail, is a striking succulent from the Cleistocactus Genus. Its slender, trailing stems are covered with golden spines, providing both beauty and protection. This plant produces vibrant tubular flowers in shades of red, orange, or pink.
To provide optimal care for Cleistocactus winteri, select a location that receives full sun and has well-draining soil. During the spring and summer, ensure to water the plant when the top inch (2.5 cm) of soil dries out. As winter approaches, reduce watering frequency to once every five weeks if the soil becomes dry. Throughout the winter, it is ideal to keep Cleistocactus drier to prevent root rot, as the combination of moist ground and cool temperatures during dormancy can be detrimental. For year-round nourishment, a slow-release fertilizer applied in the spring will suffice.
