The Ferocactus, popularly known as the Candy Barrel cactus, Fishhook Barrel, or Arizona Barrel cactus, is a highly attractive genus of cactus that is endemic to the Americas. These cacti are sure to add a pop of color and character to any garden or interior space.
These solitary globose cacti have small roots and grow well in small pots for many years, making them perfect for balcony gardens and garden beds. Named after their hook-shaped spines, this cactus can be sourced in multiple spine colours, such as red and yellow. The spines themselves are like a work of art, adding an interesting texture to the cactus.
Radically drought tolerant, these globose barrels even tolerate sporadic frost once mature, if drainage is sufficient and the winter months are relatively dry. Although uncommon, young plants are prone to mealy bugs and red spider mites. Expect these cacti to live up to 100 years of age and reach sizes of 90cm in diameter. Keep an eye on drainage, as root rot is the main cause of death for this cactus. With its hardy nature, this cactus is a great option for low-maintenance and stylish gardeners.
