Ferocactus glaucescens is a captivating medium-sized clustering cactus that adds a stunning touch of beauty to any space. Whether grown as a solitary specimen or in clusters, this magnificent plant transforms into a large, mound-like shape with multiple heads, as it matures. The stem of Ferocactus glaucescens is a gleaming glaucous gray, reaching up to 55 cm in height and 1m in diameter, with a globular form that becomes slightly columnar with age. This remarkable cactus showcases 11 to 15 ribs, each adorned with 6 to 7 light yellow radial spines that are 2.5 to 4 cm long, standing tall and straight, and possibly a single central spine that mirrors the radial spines.
During the warmer months of late spring and summer, Ferocactus glaucescens adds a pop of color to the landscape with its dazzling lemon yellow funnel-shaped flowers, measuring 3 to 4 cm in diameter. These breathtaking blooms are characterized by their oblong, lanceolate, silky and shining tepals, with finely fringed margins, making this cactus truly one-of-a-kind.
While it may be mistaken for Ferocactus echidne, Ferocactus glaucescens is able to crossbreed with this species, resulting in a unique and captivating display. Although slow-growing initially, Ferocactus glaucescens is easy to care for once it reaches its desirable flowering size. It prefers a rich, well-drained soil in full sun and will thrive in a spacious, well-drained container filled with a porous cactus soil mixture that isn't too rich in humus.
To keep Ferocactus glaucescens healthy, water and fertilize it during the growing season, but avoid wetting the plant while it is in direct sunlight, as this can lead to sunburn, scars, and even fungal infections or death. During the winter, it's best to keep the plant completely dry at 10°C to maintain its health, though it can tolerate sporadic light frost.
