The Euphorbia Ammak ‘Variegata’ is a species of succulent in the genus Euphorbia and the family Euphorbiaceae. The Euphorbia Genus contains close to 2,200 species (1200 of these are succulents), which makes this the second largest genus of plants in the world.
The Ammak is popularly known as the variegated candelabra (spurge) tree, ghost Euphorbia or Euphorbia Erythraeae f. variegata. This sculptural plant can be found in a few different color variations; each plant consists of its own unique pattern of pale greens and yellows.
Native to Yemen and Saudi Arabia Peninsula, this Euphorbia has adapted to the Australian climate nicely, growing up to 30cm each year. Although rare to come by in mature sizes, the Ammak has proven to flourish throughout coastal areas of Australia.
The Euphorbia Ammak forms small yellow bouquets, clustering around the spines of new growth in mature plants, usually over early spring. This species of Euphorbia has small spines and mature plants commonly lose these spines with age. Cactus Vision recommends the Euphorbia Ammak for restaurants and medium traffic areas of the home, preferably outdoors or indoors with 4+ hours of direct sunlight.
It’s important to note that the Euphorbia Ammak has a milky latex sap that can be an irritant to the skin and eyes. This flexible sap however makes these plants a strong contender against the wind, as they sway but can handle a strong breeze.
The Euphorbia Ammak is essentially pest-free. Outdoors, Cactus Vision appreciates using this species for areas that battle the harsh afternoon sun, as burning is uncommon. The Euphorbia Ammak is not frost-tolerant. We suggest positioning this plant in extremely well-lit indoor spaces for regions that frequently experience frosty winters. It is important to note that trimming these plants in the wrong season may kill the mother plant or affect its ability to flower, so handle with care.
